Green Relief showcased a remarkable miniature aquaponic system that can fit in your own basement during the 2018 Lift & Co. Expo in Toronto. This system demonstrated how they are able to grow cannabis on a much larger scale at their 30,000 sq ft. facility. It’s remarkable to see this method of cultivating in which they are able to conserve energy and lower the cost of fertilizing through a renewable resource.
NASA has been using this system to grow vegetables in space because of its sustainable benefits.
Based in Hamilton, Ontario — Green Relief is the first facility of its kind in North America to pioneer cannabis aquaponics. This system is scalable so it won’t be a problem once they migrate into their new 210,000 sq. ft. facility.
So what is Aquaponics? One of the Green Relief staff members pointed at the fish tanks and said, “the fish will produce waste”. These solids are then filtered and converted into nitrates for the plants as it cycles through the system. The plants are then able to help purify the water for the fishes resulting in a closed loop system.

Aquaponics uses 90% less water than traditional agriculture methods. There is no fertilizer cost because it comes from the fishes waste. Any chemicals added to the water could harm this organic ecosystem. Since it’s so efficient to grow with aquaponics, they are able to produce 30% more products and consume 40% less energy when compared to other cultivation methods.
