Why are you passionate about growing your own herbs?
"The majority of my life I have been a cannabis enthusiast and an advocate of the medical benefits it provided for me. For years I had dreamt of being able to grow my own, but legalities and the cost of a proper setup had kept my conceivable passion at bay. These days it is extremely easy for the hobbyist and medicinal grower to get a setup going at home. With grow tents, efficient LED lights that can be far less expensive than HPS (High Pressure Sodium) ones, and carbon filters for the smell, you don't necessarily have to break the bank and your back to set up an area...and that's what I did. After receiving my ACMPR (Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulation) prescription in Canada I started growing my own medicine."
Were there any obstacles that you had to overcome?
"During my first attempt at growing cannabis it seemed like every day there was a new problem. I spent a lot of time stressing about my plants and trying different solutions which only seemed to make them worse. I frantically read online at what other growers did and tried these solutions to no avail, and at times it became pretty frustrating. Even though this was a valuable trial and error learning process, the most valuable aspect I learned from this obsessive worrying was that I really didn't have to worry at all. Cannabis plants are amazingly resilient, and if you just take the time to understand and learn about the plant itself, how it grows, and what it wants, it becomes a lot less stressful. Overcoming the fear my plants will keel over was one of the first real difficulties I had to overcome."
What makes growing rewarding?
"Besides the fact that you get to harvest your own product and know exactly what its getting and where it's coming from, I find the most rewarding aspect of growing is when you see your plants responding well to your care. It's extremely satisfying knowing that your plants are happy and that your environment is dialed into your liking for them to thrive."
Favorite strain to cultivate?
"I enjoy Sativa hybrids so I'm enjoying cultivating those a lot like the Critical Jack I currently have running, but I would really like to attempt a purple strain in the near future because of the majestic colours some produce."
What growing tips do you have for the aspiring seedlings out there?
"1. Find your niche. Everyone has their own techniques and it's important to find your own and figure out what works for you.
2. Educate yourself on nutrient deficiencies, pest problems, and potential issues. Once you become familiar with these it will be easier to diagnose when something is wrong.
3. Learn about VPD (Vapour Pressure Deficit), how your environment and plants temperature is relative to your humidity, and how it uptakes nutrients in its different stages of life."
